Prof. Mohamed Hantira, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Tanta University and Chairman of the Board of University Hospitals, announced the success of the interventional catheterization unit for congenital heart defects in children at the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine in the New Surgical Hospital at Tanta University Hospitals.
For the first time in the history of the department, two interventional cardiac catheterization procedures were successfully performed on two children, and broadcast live during the 53rd annual conference of the Egyptian Society of Cardiology, held from February 10 to 12, 2026. The conference was attended by a distinguished group of professors in cardiology, pediatrics, and cardiothoracic surgery from various Egyptian universities and around the world.
This achievement comes under the patronage of Prof. Mohamed Hussein Mahmoud, President of Tanta University; Prof. Hatem Amin, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research; Prof. Mohamed Hantira, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board; Prof. Loay El-Ahwal, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development and Acting Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies; Prof. Raghda Ghoneimy El-Sheikh, Head of the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine and Head of the Congenital Heart Defects Unit, who was honored to chair this year’s conference in collaboration with the cardiology departments of Menoufia, Benha, and the Capital; and under the supervision of Prof. Hassan El-Tatawy, Executive Director of Tanta University Hospitals, and Prof. Ahmed Sweilam, Director of the Main Hospital and the New Surgical Hospital.
